For Educators

It may not seem fair to the other students in the class, but sometimes special accommodations need to be made for students with sickle cell disease.

  • Provide an open pass to the restroom.  Due to kidney function, your student may need more frequent access to the restroom than other students.
  • Allow student’s to keep bottled water at their desk.  Dehydration is a major concern due to increase urination.  Allowing for water privileges will help prevent pain crises.
  • Assist with missed classroom instruction.  Students may miss class often due to pain crises.  This should not be held against them.  Work with students and parents to make up missed school work.
  • Monitor physical activity and temperature.  Student’s need to avoid both extreme heat and cold.  If you notice your student is over exerting themselves, suggest a different activity for them.
